Many of us have a hard time understanding the love of God. I personally have struggled with understanding His great love for me. I used to live like His love was dependent on my performance on my walk of faith, which is idolatry. My mindset was, "I have to do something to make God love me more."

How much does God love me?

I want you to take a look at Song of Solomon 4:9. Marriage represents the beautiful and deep relationship between Christ and the church. This verse reveals how much God loves you. One look upward and you have the Lord hooked. He wants to be with you and when you enter into His presence His heart beats faster and faster for you.

The Lord looks at His children in love and excitement because He deeply loves His children. Does God really love us and if so, how much?

There is absolutely no denying God's love for humanity. Humanity never wanted anything to do with God.

The Bible says that we were dead in our trespasses and sins. We are enemies of God. In fact, we were God-haters. Be honest, does a person such as this, deserve love from God? If you're honest, then the answer is no. We deserve God's wrath because we have sinned against a holy God. However, God made a way to reconcile sinful people to Himself. He sent His holy and person Son who He perfectly loved, to take our place.

Take a moment to imagine the perfect relationship between the Father and Son. In every relationship there is always enjoyment, but in this relationship, they perfectly enjoyed each other. They had perfect fellowship with one another. Everything was created for His Son. Colossians 1:16 says, "all things have been created through him and for him."

The Father gave His Son everything and the Son always obeyed His Father. The relationship was impeccable. However, Isaiah 53:10 reminds us that it pleased God to crush His Son whom He deeply loved. God got glory for Himself by crushing His Son for you. John 3:16 says, "He (so) loved the world." He so loved [Insert name].

Love comes from God

Where does love come from? How are you able to love your mother, father, child, friends, etc. God's love is so powerful that it enables us to love others. Think about how parents see their newborn child and smile. Think about parents playing with their children and having a good time.

1 John 4:19 "We love because He first loved us.

Have you ever thought about where does that stuff come from? These things are here to be representations to reveal how much God loves and is joyful over His children.

"We love, because He first loved us." (1 John 4:19) God loved us first. He loved us before He created us. Jesus loved us and went to the cross to die in our place before we were born. Jesus was the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world (Revelation 13:8).

This means that from the creation of the world, because of God's foreknowledge of man's sin, the plan for Jesus' ultimate act of love was already in place. We were loved, knowing that we would sin, that we would reject Him, and that Jesus would have to die to pay the price for our sin to restore relationship between God and us.

But there's more! The word translated "first" in 1 John 4:19 is prótos in Greek. It means first in the sense of time, but it also carries the idea of chief or first in rank, leading, absolutely, best. God's love for us exceeds any love we could possibly have for Him or others – His love is best, and His love is absolute – entire, complete, immeasurable.

God's love also sets the standard for us to follow. His love leads us – because He loved us first and supremely, we have an inkling of what love is, and we can begin to return that love to Him, and we can begin to love others as He loves us. And the more we do that, the more we grow in love. The more we love, the more we begin to understand the depths of His love.

Is God's love unconditional?

This goes back to God loving us first. He loved us before we were born – before we did anything. His love wasn't conditioned on anything we did or didn't do. Jesus didn't go to the cross for us because we loved Him or because we did anything to earn His love. He didn't love us so much that He died for us because we obeyed Him or lived righteously and lovingly. He loved us then and loves us now because that is His nature. He loved us even when we rebelled against Him: ". . . while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son." (Romans 5:10)

As humans, we love because we recognize something in someone that draws our heart to that person. But God loves us when there is nothing within us to draw His love. He loves us, not because we are worthy, but because He is God.

And yet, that doesn't mean we get a free pass to sin! God's love doesn't mean that everyone will be saved from Hell. It doesn't mean that the unrepentant will escape God's wrath. God loves us, but He hates sin! Our sin has alienated us from God. Jesus' death on the cross removed God's estrangement from us, but to enter into relationship with God – to experience the fulness of His love – you must:

  • repent of your sins and turn to God, (Acts 3:19) and
  • confess Jesus as your Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead. (Romans 10:9)

God is love Bible verses

Love is one of God's primary attributes. God does not just feel and express love. He is love! (1 John 4:16) Love is the very nature of God, going beyond His feelings and emotions – as mind-blowing as these are. He is the definition of genuine love. Every word and every action of God is born out of love. Everything God does is loving.

God is the source of all true love. We have the ability to love because He first loved us. (1 John 4:19) The more we know God and comprehend His nature of love, the more we can genuinely love Him and love others. God is the essence of love – He defines love. When we know God, we know what real love is. Think about this for a moment. God's nature and essence are love and for those who are born again, this amazing loving God is living inside of them.

Upon professing faith in Christ, we were given the Holy Spirit, which is God's Spirit and He enables us to love with a greater love.

Our response to God's love is that we will grow in our love for Him and others.

What does the Bible say about God's love?

The Bible has a lot to say about God's love! God's love is perfect. Our human love for one another and even for God is often diminished by selfishness, unfaithfulness, and impermanence. But God's perfect, complete, and all-consuming love went to the ultimate length to save us. "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16) God's love is pure and unselfish and extravagantly generous. "He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?" (Romans 8:32)

God loves each of us intensely and personally. "But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our wrongdoings, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the boundless riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus." (Ephesians 2:4-7)

God's love is never-ending, never-changing, never-failing. "The Lord's acts of mercy indeed do not end, for His compassions do not fail. They are new every morning." (Lamentations 3:22-23)

He never stops loving us, no matter what we do. He loves us regardless of whether we love Him. He died for us, so He could restore relationship with us, when we were His enemies! (Romans 5:10)

God has poured out His love into our hearts. True love results in action. God poured out His awesome love for us on the cross. He crushed His Son so that you and I may live. When you allow your joy and peace to come from the perfect merit of Christ, you will understand God's love better.

God's love is not dependent on what you do, what you are going to do, or what you have done.

God's love is greatly shown by what He has already done for you on the cross of Jesus Christ.

God's love in the Old Testament

There are several stories in the Old Testament that reveals God's love for His people. One of them being, the story of Hosea and Gomer. The prophet Hosea was told by God to marry a promiscuous woman named Gomer.

Take a moment to realize what God was telling Hosea to do. He was telling a faithful prophet to marry a very promiscuous woman. The prophet Hosea obeyed the Lord. He married this woman and had three kids with her. Gomer was unfaithful to Hosea. After bearing three kids with Hosea, Gomer would leave him to run back to her promiscuous lifestyle. If this happened to most people, I believe that most people would be thinking, "it's time for a divorce."

However, in the story, Hosea does not divorce his unfaithful wife. God tells Hosea, "Go find her." Most people would probably be saying to themselves, "she cheated on me, she's adulterous, she's totally unworthy of my love." However, God is not like us. God told Hosea to go find his unfaithful bride. Once again, Hosea obeyed the Lord and diligently searched for His bride. He went to the most corrupt places in search of his bride. He relentlessly pursued his bride and he would eventually find his bride. Hosea is now in front of Gomer and she is filthy, messy, and she is now the ownership of another man.

Gomer knows that right now, she is in a sticky situation and she's a wreck. The man who owns Gomer tells Hosea that if he wants his wife back, then he has to pay a high price for her. Imagine having to buy your own wife back. She's already yours! Hosea does not get angry and argue. Hosea didn't yell at his wife. He paid the expensive cost to get his wife back. There is so much grace and love in this story.

Hosea bought back his unfaithful bride. Gomer didn't deserve such grace, love, goodness, forgiveness, and favor from Gomer. Don't you see the great love of God in this story? God is our Creator. He owns us. God sent His perfect holy Son to die the death that we deserve. He sent Christ to pay our fine for us, when we were in a sticky situation. He sent Jesus to rescue us from dark places, when we were broken, messy, in bondage, and unfaithful. Similar to Hosea, Christ came, paid a high price, and set us free from our sin and shame. While we were still sinners, He loved us and died for us. Similar to Gomer, Christ loved underserving men and women.

I believe most believers, if we're honest, forget to praise the Lord for His love, grace, and mercy on a regular basis. If we did, I believe that we would notice a tremendous difference in our walk with Christ. We would walk with more joy, a sense of gratitude, and we'd worry less.

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.

There would be less fear in our hearts because when we make a habit of praising the Lord, we are reminding ourselves of God's attributes, His amazing character, and His sovereignty.

We are reminding ourselves that we serve a mighty trustworthy God. Be still for a moment.

Reflect on all the ways that God has revealed His love for you. Reflect on all the ways that you are blessed and use them as opportunities to praise His name daily.

God's love never fails Bible verses

I've experienced hard times. I've experienced disappointment. I've lost everything before. I've been in the most difficult situations. However, one thing that remains true in every season, is that God's love has never failed me. His presence has always been so real in my darkest hours.

I'm not denying that you haven't been through difficult situations, that caused you to wonder if God loves you or not. Maybe because of your struggles with sin, you are doubting God's love for you.

I'm here to tell you what the Scripture says and what I've experienced. God's love never fails. Don't let Satan cause you to doubt His love.

I have loved you with an everlasting love. Jeremiah 31:3

God loves you so much. God's love should be our source because it never fails. Even when our love fails, when we as believers fail, and when we are faithless, His love stands firm. I don't know about you, but that makes me want to rejoice in the Lord.

God is good! God is faithful! Let's praise the Lord for His unfailing love. No matter what situation that you find yourself in, He will get glory for Himself. God will use even bad situations for His glory and your ultimate good. We can trust in God's unfailing love for us.

True believers have the love of God in them.

Those who have put their faith in Christ are born again. Christians are now able to love others unlike ever before. Our love should be so remarkable that it's supernatural. It should be evident that God has done a supernatural work in you.

1 John 4:12 "His love is perfected in us."

Why do we forgive the worst sinners? It's because, we have been forgiven much by God. Why do we make radical sacrifices and go above and beyond for others?

It's because, Christ went above and beyond for us. Christ chose poverty instead of His heavenly riches, so that He could pay our sin debts and so that we can spend eternity with Him in heaven.

Any sacrifice from our lives for others, is simply a small glimpse of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. When you understand the depth of God's love for you, it changes everything about you.

When you have been forgiven much, you yourself forgive much. When you realize how underserving you really are, but you experience God's lavish love, that radically changes the way that you love. The Christian has the Holy Spirit living inside of him and the Spirit enables us to do good works.

I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him."

How is the love of God perfected in us?

"Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God remains in us, and His love is perfected in us." (1 John 4:12)

God's love is perfected in us when we love others. We can have an intellectual knowledge of God's love but not an experiential understanding. To experience God's love is to be head over heels in love with Him – valuing and loving what He loves – and loving others as we love ourselves. As God's love fills our lives, we become more like Jesus, so that "as He is, we also are in this world." (1 John 4:17)

As we become more like Jesus, we begin to have a supernatural love for other people. We practice love as Jesus did, sacrificially putting the earthly and spiritual needs of other people before our own needs. We live "with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love." (Ephesians 4:2) We are kind to others, compassionate, forgiving – just as God has forgiven us. (Ephesians 4:32)

Does God really love me?

Pray for a greater understanding of the love of God. Sometimes it is so hard to grasp His love for us especially when we look into the mirror and see all of our failures. Without knowing how much God loves you, you are going to feel so miserable.

I was praying one night and I was thinking to myself that God wants me to do more, no! The whole time that I was praying I didn't understand that all God wanted for me was to just understand His great love for me. I don't have to move a muscle I am loved.

100. 2 Thessalonians 3:5 " May the Lord lead your hearts into a full understanding and expression of the love of God and the patient endurance that comes from Christ. "

101. Ephesians 3:16-19 "I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord's holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

102. Joel 2:13 "Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity."

Nothing can separate us from the love of God.Nothing Can Separate You From God's Love

God is not mad at you. Whenever you think that you have done something to separate yourself from God's love or it's too late to get right with God or you need to be more to be loved of God, remember that nothing can separate God's love for you. Always remember that God's love never ends.

"Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or trouble, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? . . . But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 8:35, 37-39)

Being sons and daughters of God involves suffering with Christ. (Romans 8:17) We inevitably encounter the forces of darkness. Sometimes this can be spiritual forces of evil that bring sickness or death or calamity. And sometimes it can be people, operating under the influence of demonic spirits, that will persecute those who are Christ-followers. We have seen believers persecuted for their faith around the world, and now we are beginning to experience it in our own country.

When experiencing suffering, we must remember that God has not stopped loving us or has abandoned us. That is precisely what Satan want us to think, and we must resist such lies of the enemy. No evil in the world can separate us from God's love. In fact, "we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us." We overwhelmingly conquer when we live with the confidence that God loves us, no matter our circumstances, and He never leaves nor forsakes us. When suffering comes, we aren't devastated, we aren't frustrated or confused or diminished.

When we pass through seasons of suffering, Christ is our companion. Nothing – no person, no circumstance, no demonic force – can separate us from God's love. God's love is sovereignly triumphant over anything that might attempt to derail us.

The love of God compels us to do His will.

It is the love of God that drives me to keep fighting and obeying Him. It is the love of God that allows me to discipline myself and it gives me a desire to keep pushing when struggling with sin. The love of God transforms us.

109. 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 "For Christ's love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again."

110. Galatians 2:20 "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."

Ephesians 2:2-5 "in which you formerly lived according to this world's present path, according to the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the ruler of the spirit that is now energizing the sons of disobedience, among whom all of us also formerly lived out our lives in the cravings of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath even as the rest. 112. John 14:23 "Jesus replied, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make Our home with him."

It was the love of God that drove Jesus when everyone was yelling, "crucify Him."

It was the love of God that drove Jesus to keep going in humiliation and pain. With every step and with every drop of blood the love of God drove Jesus to do the will of His Father.

115. John 19:1-3 "Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged severely. The soldiers braided a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they clothed him in a purple robe. They came up to him again and again and said, "Hail, king of the Jews!" And they struck him repeatedly in the face."

116. Matthew 3:17 "And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."

117. Mark 9:7 "Then a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and a voice came from the cloud: "This is My beloved Son. Listen to Him!"

118. John 5:20 "The Father loves the Son and shows Him all He does. And to your amazement, He will show Him even greater works than these."

119. John 3:35 "The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands. 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on them."

120. John 13:3 "Jesus knew that the Father had delivered all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was returning to God."

Sharing God's love with others

We are told to share the love of God with others. God wants us to share His love with others through ministering to their spiritual and physical needs. "Beloved, let's love one another; for love is from God, and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God." (1 John 4:7)

Jesus' final command was, "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to follow all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:19-20) Jesus wants us to share His good news of salvation with others, so that they too may experience His love.

We need to be intentional about fulfilling this command. We should be praying for and sharing our faith with our family, our neighbors, our friends, and our colleagues. We should be praying for, giving to, and engaging in the work of missions around the world – especially concentrating on those parts of the world where only a tiny percentage even know who Jesus Christ is, much less believe in Him. Everyone deserves to hear the message of God's great love at least once in their lifetime.

When Jesus walked the earth, He also ministered to the physical needs of people. He fed the hungry. He healed the sick and disabled. When we minister to people's physical needs, we are sharing His love. Proverbs 19:17 says, "One who is gracious to a poor person lends to the LORD." The early Christians were even selling their own property so they could share with those in need. (Acts 2:45) There was not a needy person among them. (Acts 4:34) Likewise, Jesus wants us to share His love with others by meeting their physical needs. "But whoever has the world's goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him?" (1 John 3:17)

God's discipline proves His lov e for us

God doesn't overlook our sin simply because He loves us. In fact, like any good parent, He disciplines us when we sin, and He disciplines us when He wants to perfect His love in us. This is part of God's love for us – "for whom the Lord loves, He disciplines." (Hebrews 12:6) He wants the best for us and from us.

If parents have no concern for the moral character of their children, they are not loving their children. They are being cruel, not kind, for allowing them to grow up with no moral compass, with no self-discipline or compassion for others. Parents who love their children discipline them, so they develop into productive and loving people of integrity. Discipline involves lovingly correcting, training, and educating, along with consequences for disobedience.

God disciplines us because He loves us, and He wants us to love Him and love others more than we do now. The two greatest commands are:

  1. to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength,
  2. to love others as we love ourselves. (Mark 12:30-31)

Loving God and loving others is what God is disciplining us to do.

Going through suffering does not necessarily mean that God is disciplining us. Jesus was perfect, and He suffered. We can expect suffering as believers. It's part of living in a fallen world and being assailed by spiritual forces of evil. Sometimes our own poor choices bring suffering down upon us. So, if you're experiencing suffering, don't jump to the conclusion that there must be some sin that God wants to root out of your life.

God's discipline doesn't always involve punishment. When we discipline our children, it isn't always spankings and time out. It first involves teaching them the correct way, modeling it before them, reminding them when they're straying, warning them of consequences. This is preventive discipline, and this is how God wants to work in our lives; that's how He prefers to discipline.

Sometimes we are stubborn and resist God's preventative discipline, so then we get God's corrective discipline (punishment). Paul told the Corinthians that some of them were sick and dying because of taking communion in an unworthy way. (1 Corinthians 11:27-30)

So, if you feel that you may be experiencing God's corrective discipline, you want to pray David's prayer, "Search me, God, and know my heart; put me to the test and know my anxious thoughts; and see if there is any hurtful way in me and lead me in the everlasting way." (Psalm 139:23-24) If God brings a sin to your mind, confess it, repent (stop doing it), and receive His forgiveness. But realize that suffering isn't always because God is disciplining you.

133. Deuteronomy 8:5 "So know in your heart that just as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you."

Experiencing God's love Bible verses

Paul prayed an amazing intercessory prayer that tells us how to experience God's love:

"I bend my knees before the Father, . . . that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner self, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend . . . what is the width and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled to all the fullness of God." (Ephesians 3:14-19)

The first step in experiencing God's love is being strengthened with power through His Spirit in our inner self. This Holy Spirit empowerment happens when we spend quality time reading, meditating on, and following His Word, when we spend quality time in prayer and praise, and when we join other believers for mutual encouragement, worship, and receiving the teaching of God's Word.

The next step in experiencing God's love is for Christ to dwell in our hearts through faith. Now, many people refer to receiving Christ as Savior as "asking Christ into your heart." But Paul is praying for Christians here, within whom the Spirit of God is already dwelling. He means an experiential dwelling – Christ feels at home in our hearts when we yield to Him, allowing Him to control our spirits, our emotions, our will.

Step three is being rooted and grounded in love. Does this mean God's love for us, or our love for Him, or our love for others? Yes. All three. The love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit. (Romans 5:5) This enables us to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength and to love others as we love ourselves. We are rooted in love when we do that – when we don't allow distractions to subdue our love for God, and when we love others as Christ loves us.

When these three things happen, we experience the immeasurable, incomprehensible love of God. God's love surpasses our limited human knowledge, and yet we can know His love. A divine paradox!
When we live in the experience of God's love, we are "filled to all the fulness of God." We can't be filled to all the fulness of God and also full of ourselves. We need to empty ourselves – of self-dependence, selfishness, self-dominance. When we are filled to all the fulness of God, we are amply supplied, we are complete, we have the abundance of life that Jesus came to give.

God's love causes us to remain calm, stand strong, and never give up. However, there is so much more of God's love that we are yet to experience. One of the most beautiful things to me is that, God wants us to to experience Him. He wants us to desire Him. He wants us to pray for more of Him and He desires to give Himself to us.

I encourage you to pray to experience the love of God in a deeper way. Keep on getting alone with Him and seek His face. Don't give up in prayer! Say, "Lord I want to know You and experience You."

Examples of God's love in the Bible

There are a plethora of Bible stories that reveal God's love. In every chapter of the Bible, we notice God's powerful love. In fact, God's love is seen in every line of the Bible.

Conclusion

I can't brag about my love for the Lord because I am so unworthy and I fall so short of His glory. One thing that I can brag about, is that God loves me greatly and He is working in me daily to help me understand it more and more. If you are a believer write it down, put it on your wall, highlight it in your Bible, put it in your mind, put it in your heart, and don't forget that God loves you.

"May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the perseverance of Christ." (2 Thessalonians 3:5) How do we direct our hearts to God's love? By meditating on His Word about His love (the Psalms are a great place to start) and by praising God for His great love. The more we meditate on and praise God for His infinite love, the deeper we grow in intimacy with Him and in experiencing His love.
